The route from Skardu to Deosai

The most common approach is via Sadpara Lake, just south of Skardu city. The road climbs steadily from Sadpara up to the Deosai plateau, reaching the plains near Sheosar Lake on the far side toward Astore.

Total distance from Skardu to the heart of Deosai is roughly 35–50 km depending on where you stop, but distance is misleading here — the terrain, not the kilometres, determines your travel time.

How long does the trip take?

Expect 2.5 to 3.5 hours one way from Skardu to the central Deosai plains. The road is unpaved for most of the plateau, with river crossings and rough patches that keep speeds low. Many travellers do Deosai as a long day trip, while others camp overnight near Sheosar Lake to catch sunrise and the night sky.

You need a 4x4 jeep

This is non-negotiable: an ordinary car cannot reach Deosai. The terrain past Sadpara requires a proper 4x4 with good ground clearance, and a driver who knows the route and current road conditions. Attempting it in a sedan is unsafe and will likely leave you stranded.
